About Secular Houston

Our Story
In late 2021, it became clear that Houston lacked a consistent secular voice in local politics. There was no organized effort advocating for the separation of church and state, and no unified response to the growing influence of Christian Nationalism across all levels of government.
That's why we formed Secular Houston. Established in December 2021, our mission is to support and help elect candidates who are committed to upholding church-state separation and protecting the rights of all constituents, regardless of their religious beliefs or non-beliefs.
Our Mission Statement
Secular Houston exists for two main reasons:
1
An informational site for everything secular in Houston, in Texas, and beyond
2
To help elect candidates based on the separation of church and state, as well as other progressive issues
We want to educate people on what secular means, and to let them know that community exists for nonbelievers. We want to educate people, who want to get more politically involved, on how they can efficiently focus their energy to affect the change that they want to see.
We are so proud of the interfaith coalitions that we have formed in our fight against Christian Nationalism. They fight as hard, if not harder, than our secular groups do. And we think that's amazing. We are overjoyed to be should to shoulder with them in this fight. The combination of non-believers and believers advocating for the same thing is dynamite.
Elected officials make the decisions that affect us all, especially at the local level. Our goal is to let them know that people exist who care about church-state separation. And that we are worth listening to.
