About Us

This is a one-stop shop for everything secular in the Greater Houston area.

What does it mean to be secular?

The dictionary defines it as “of or relating to worldly things or to things that are not regarded as religious, spiritual, or sacred; not pertaining to or connected with religion”.  That’s a good place to start.

If you want to make this corner of the world a better place without the cover of dogma, you are in the right place.  If you want to meet like-minded people to share community based in reason…we are glad to meet you.  If you want to engage in education or activism of various kinds in a most secular way…save this link!

Our calendar will be as inclusive as possible.  You will find local groups and national organizations here; we hope that you find a flavor that suits you.  A more robust secular voice is needed now more than ever.  Our numbers are growing.  Thank you for adding your voice of reason and compassion.

The purpose of Secular Houston is to work with local politicians of all parties, contributing a robust voice and representation of secular values; increasing the visibility and respect for non-theistic viewpoints; and protecting the religiously neutral character of government, as envisioned by the founders of this nation, by encouraging local politicians to adopt secular policies.

The purpose of Secular Houston shall be to help elect local candidates that align with secular values by providing a centralized repository of expertise and a clearinghouse for all secular campaign activities. This will be accomplished by working with the various endorsed campaigns by organizing secular constituents in the Greater Houston area to promote the values of service, competence, and honor in support of Secular Houston and its endorsed candidates.  In addition, Secular Houston will encourage participation of secular constituents and raise awareness of secular issues in the Greater Houston area.

In promoting its purposes Secular Houston will use meetings, websites, and other media of publicity and communication to increase knowledge of all matters pertaining to the organization and encourage cooperation among secular persons in the Greater Houston area.

We are a group of like-minded individuals from a variety of backgrounds, creeds, faiths, and even political standing; the goal that moves us to action is the common ground of secular humanism and a strong desire to promote a government grounded in secularism.  Our goal is not anti-theistic, rather pro-secular.
